What is Hard Water?

Hard water contains minerals such as magnesium and calcium. This minerals bond to the molecules in water. They are the culprits that leave the white flakey stains on your faucets and showerheads. Also if you have a dishwasher, these minerals leave the white spots on your glasses and dishes. Overtime these elements damage your household appliances such as your washing machine, dishwasher, and faucets. It can cut the lifespan of these appliances in half.

How Does a Water Softener Work?

A water softener removes these hard water minerals with an ion exchange. Ion exchange is the process when hard water passes through the resin in the mineral tank. The resin is also know as softener media. The resin acts like a magnet, attracting the hard minerals, thus creating soft water.

Overtime the resin will collect enough minerals that it needs to be cleaned. Water softeners today all have a setting on the amount of gallons it will turn into soft water and then enter a stage called regeneration.

The salt in the smaller tank creates brine water. This salt solution is used to cleanse the media in the softener’s mineral tank. During regeneration it will go through multiple steps such as: fill, rinse, and repeat. Think of it like a washing machine cycle. Most people will set the cleaning of resin to happen during early mornings while they are sleeping. During regeneration you will still have water flow in your home, it just will not be soft water.

Common SIgns that You Need to Repair/Replace Your Water Softener

  1. Seeing Signs of Hard Water – If you notice your clothes and fabrics becoming stiffer and not as bright, water spots on your dishes and glassware, or a white crusty buildup on your pipes and appliances.
  2. Soaps and Detergents not Lathering – Your soap and detergents are not as sudsy. Hard water makes it more difficult for soaps to become bubbly and sudsy.
  3. Skin is dry and itchy – when getting out of the shower is your skin feeling dry, not having that slickness? That means your water is becoming hard and minerals are depositing on your skin.
  4. Water Softener not regenerating – Have you noticed that your water softener is not going into regeneration anymore. This can happen due to worn out parts. Like all appliances, your water softener may need some maintenance or repair.
